When Bryan says that we’re scheduling a wine tasting and I should make appetizers, I know it’s going to be a great night! Kathy and Sam Coffman, who happen to be Bryans neighbors, won an auction item at a Sacred Heart Auction and invited a total of 10 people to participate in the event. We set the table up in a great U shape that gave is a wonderful runway to pour wine and eventually dance in!
Bryan and Joe Chandler had to take us back to the basics and even though I drink wine all the time, sometimes you hear something that you’ve never heard before and sticks with you. I loved the way the guys compared wine to milk. They said with milk you have skim, 1%, 2%, whole, and cream and with red wine you have pinot noir, merlot, zins, and cabs. I’m always looking for different ways to make wine seem less intimidating and comparing wine to milk seems pretty simple.
By the end of the tasting, we had played musical chairs a few times, the music was louder and the urge to dance became strong. The runway became Soul Train….actually, a pictures is worth a thousand words so I’ll let them do the talking…

What a wonderful day! One of the best parts of being in a city with so much history and living in a house that is so old (built in 1912) is learning about all the neat people that have lived here.
Today I had a fascinating visit with Gayla Drollinger, her brother, and her parents, Roy and JoAnn Chambers. They lived in The David House from 1947-1957. Gayla’s brother had driven by The David House and when she found out what we do here, she couldn’t resist. After speaking on the phone for months, she came from Texas to Kansas City for a finally reunion and made some time to bring the whole family to the old house.
I learned that in the media room there used to be a dance floor. In the 1920’s during prohibition, Bonner Springs locals would come to The David House and dance and drink the night away. Can you imagine?!
I was also fascinated with their living arrangements. The entire family lived on the first floor. The kids slept in the small dining room, the big dining room was used as a family room and the parents slept in what is now the bar. Roy built a staircase from where the fountain is now in the back up to the second floor and the family would rent out the rooms to people who were helping build this town. Seems like The David House was meant to be a bed and breakfast from the very beginning!
Finally, I was shocked at how they purchased this house! In 1947, the traded in their old house for $7,500 (no, I didn’t leave out a zero) and paid less than $20,000 for this house. Incredible!
I’ve included some pictures of our great visit! Thank you Drollingers and Chambers for a great day!
